Flagged

  1. Cool silhouetted, raggedy flags against the waning light. Looks like they've been through a battle or two, maybe with the elements.

  2. Spooky... was this in China ? What was it ? A memorial or a tomb ?

  3. I love this silhouette. They look so battered and worn and threatening, but safe at the same time. Dusk is a word I've always associated with battle -- not sure why -- so this picture really fits in with my imagination.

  4. I deliberately didn't say what this was as I was interested to know what people would make of it without my input...I will reveal all soon!

  9. Interesting shot. The flags look like they've been through a lifetime of struggles, and yet pieces of them are still flying.
Gee, I never told you about uni-clawed X-men in Utah? How could that have slipped my mind...

  11. Ok, time to reveal all: they are flags attached to fisherman's buoys, they were propped in one end of a fisherman's boat on Worthing seafront. They're tattered from years of being exposed to elements. To me, they can seem quite ordinary because they're so familiar, so I was pleased to be able to make them look rather mysterious.

I think comparisons with battle are quite valid - the fisherman does battle with the weather, the sea, the economy...And has long, hard days - many of them sell their catch themselves at the beach after going out.

  12. I assumed prayer flags in the Far East. Well, I suppose Worthing is a bit further east than Weymouth so I wasn't far out.

  13. Lucy - great comment. :) The comments to this post have also made me wonder if there is a god of fishermen. There must be surely, it's such an archtypal occupation...
